About Us

My name is Jim Miller and I am the Founder and President of Diets for Life. During my (25+) years of working with dogs on a daily basis through my Pet Care Service and as an independent researcher, I’ve come to the conclusion that the majority of our furry friends are succumbing to a garden-variety of diseases, most of which are the direct result of improper nutritional habits. The really sad part is that most of these infirmities are highly preventable. Dogs in the wild don’t develop cancer, heart disease, diabetes, movement disorders, etc. Nature has its own screening process where the ones lucky enough to survive into adulthood play a continuous game of avoiding predation and yielding to infectious diseases – not falling prey to the ambiguity of domestically-prepared diets that run counter to your pet’s DNA coding. A dog’s physiological make-up does not allow for the break-down of gluten, processed carbs and refined sugars. Only bad things can happen when you feed your dog these things. This was the impetus for starting Diets for Life. I have worked out a comprehensive system of eating that subscribes to the theory that "one size does not fit all." Regardless of your dog’s present health status, Diets for Life can make almost any situation more manageable. While I cannot guarantee full remission of things like level 3 cancers or the complete reversal of certain gluten induced problems, it has been my experience working with hundreds of dogs through the years that my diet plan really works. Dogs just don’t seem to get sick. No cancers. Heart disease was minimal (98% of dogs remained heart healthy after 7 years in which I kept track). Diabetes and insulin-related issues were unheard of. People that were giving their dogs vet-prescribed medications were saving lots of money by simply dumping the pharmaceuticals after starting my program. Since I am not a vet, registered dietician or conventionally-trained clinician, I am able to give a clear-cut, unbiased assessment based on many years of dedicated research and independent study. Food is your dog’s best line of defense for high level immunity. I don’t advocate or endorse supplementation, pharmaceuticals or fad diets. Diets for Life is based on cold, hard scientific facts.
I started out many years ago thinking otherwise. Biology was my major in college and I really wanted to make an impact. The initial plan was to graduate with an undergraduate degree in Biology and then head on to Med School and become a veterinarian. The more I found out about conventional approaches in treating disease, the more I became convinced that the answer was not in a pill or gel cap, but lay in the simple, unassailable truth that the further away your dog gets from his ancestral way of eating – the worse they are for it. Let’s face it, something is wrong somewhere when 52% (I believe that the percentage is actually higher – 60%) of our beloved pets develop cancer at some point in their lives. Heart disease and diabetes run rampant among them, as well
I quit college and decided to pursue other entrepreneurial endeavors after a few years. Despite my frustration with the “system,” I kept reading everything I could find on nutrition. I attended lectures and tried to pick the brains of the best of the best in the field of food science. Simply knowing the obvious and conventional was not enough for me. I wanted to know every minute detail about how food affects the overall functioning and maintenance of the body. Why do some dogs continuously seem to get sick, while others enjoy vigorous health throughout all life stages and never see the inside of a Vet’s office except for their yearly round of preventative screenings and shots. Was this happenstance? Were they random winners in a genetic lottery of physiological well-being? That’s hardly the case. Emerging evidence now points to the fact that the food you eat can actually be a contributing factor as to whether or not deleterious genes are switched on or off. Moreover, whether or not these genes express themselves can be directly linked to the nutritional status of your dog’s overall physiological well-being and immunity. Simply stated, if you practice bad nutritional habits over the long haul with your dog, only bad things can happen.
As the years passed, I continued to bounce from one bad job to another. I knew that my career was going nowhere fast. That all changed in February 1991 when I was terminated from my position at a small engineering company. That would be the last time I would ever work for someone else. I started my sports collectibles business (The Classic Corner) and found immediate gratification and a newly minted sense of purpose. (4) years later I founded my Pet Care Service and was off and running. Over the course of the past (20+) years, I have witnessed literally thousands upon thousands of feeding sessions with dogs. I know what people feed their dogs. Regardless of socio-economic status and pedigree, almost none of my customers were adhering to the principles of sound nutritional habits. I wanted that to change. Formulating my own diet plans and implementing them into my own dog’s eating ritual became a way of life. Soon, I began to do the same thing for friends, colleagues and associates. I provided this service gratis, knowing full well that I was really on to something. Lack of monetary compensation notwithstanding, I had the satisfaction of knowing that all of my diets were working and people’s pets were reaping the benefits. Fast forward several years and I’m pleased to announce that all of my original “test subjects” (my own beloved dog included) are doing well.
The dogs (approx. 100) range in age from 2 to 15. None have developed cancer, diabetes, etc. A few who had pre-existing heart conditions prior to starting Diets for Life are reportedly doing much better now. Of course, any time a dog has a pre-existing condition or illness that has been diagnosed by a Vet and made know to the owner, I caution people that you must get clearance and approval from your (dog’s) health care provider 1st before I will work with you. Secondly, we have a detailed physiological profile that must be filled out in its entirety, so we have a very clear picture of what’s going on with your dog. We need to know about any Vet prescribed drugs your dog is taking, botanicals, vitamin supplements, homeopathic remedies, etc.
Success breeds confidence. I have now seen conclusively, many times over. that my Diets for Life plans work. Theoretical ideas are great, but I have put this into real-world practice time and time again. I now do this professionally full-time and can’t wait to meet the challenges of each new client. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and work with each and every dog owner who has legitimate concerns about how his/her pet ages over the course of a life-time.
Jim Miller has attended High Point (NC) University, Drexel University and Mercer County Community College. He is an ongoing researcher and indefatigable fact-finder on canine-related nutrition. Anything pertaining to dog diets, be they emerging theories or peer-reviewed scientific
Doctrine, have come under the scrutiny of Jim’s watchful eye. In addition to attending lectures, reading and writing, Jim is also currently studying Homeopathy, medicinal mushrooms and natural plant-based food cures. Diets for Life is the substrate for many more things to follow. Plans are already in the works for a book and/or guide outlining my good canine eating principles. My Diets for Life hummus will be patent-pending shortly.
Jim lives in Hamilton Square, NJ with his beloved Border Collie Shelby.
