Diets For Life - What's New For 2018
2018 is going to be a very interesting year for Diets for Life. I have decided to take a sabbatical from the show circuit and concentrate on introducing our holistic hummus to area pet stores. Pet food must now be AAFCO compliant (The AAFCO is a state run agency that oversees that pet food products must meet standard criteria of appropriate labeling that features a complete nutritional profile) with a full nutritional profile label that lists all percentages of various vitamins and minerals. I’ve done that. Our new profile label is easily accessible on the bottom section of our container. Before I can proceed, the AAFCO wants a copy of this label along with any other pertinent information to be submitted to their office.
In addition to the nutritional profile label, I may be required to rent out a commercial facility to produce my hummus. Commercial facility food production requires a yearly license (the costs vary from state to state) Currently, I make my holistic hummus right in my kitchen. A quick look on the AAFCO website indicates that producing a food product at home is perfectly legal and exempt from licensure, however there may be extenuating circumstances that preclude me from doing this – at least on a large scale. I am in contact with the AAFCO, so I should know shortly what is required of me.
We are also going to introduce our newest hummus flavor – Berry Berry Good - to the general public in 2018. Berry Berry Good is comprised of the following ingredients:
White Beans
Tahini
Raspberries
Blackberries
Olive Oil
I am thinking of adding flaxseed powder to the mix but so far it’s only on the drawing board. Once we have everything ready, testing will begin (same as when we introduced our Blueberry Splash &Strawberry Coconut Cluster flavors). We will be selecting a diverse group of at least (100) healthy canines to try our new product. Owners will be given samples to feed their dog(s) at least once a day. Any changes in bowel habits or intestinal distress should be noted and reported to us. Essentially we are trying to determine the palatability and overall appeal of our product. Our other hummus products were overwhelmingly well-received by test subjects. None of the test recipients had any degree of intestinal distress, change in bowel habits, stomach problems, etc. There were , however, a small percentage of dogs that “just didn’t like our product.” Owners reported things like “my dog wouldn’t even try it” or “they ate all their food – except for the hummus.” Once again, this was a very small percentage of canines that didn’t like it and not truly representative of its overall appeal.
You don’t have to wait until our food products hit the pet stores, you can purchase them right now on our website, by phone, or by e-mail. Feel free to contact us at:
