Diets for Life is now for Cats too!
Why should dogs have all the fun? We are pleased to announce that Diets for Life is now for felines, too. We will be writing out complete holistic programs, including dietary needs, juicing, fasting and rehab for your furry companions. Cats have distinctly different nutritional needs from their canine counterparts. For example, cats are known as obligate carnivores, meaning that they need to eat meat as their primary protein source – a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is not an option. Sure, they can have small amounts of low glycemic, unrefined carbohydrates along with a minimal serving of the “good fats” to ensure optimal health but, for the most part, meat is a requisite staple in their diet.
I’m often asked the question, “as a cat ages, do his dietary requirements change as well?” The answer to that is “as long as your pet is healthy, you really don’t need to revamp their diet.” Conversely, if your cat is sick – what then? Depending on the nature and severity of the condition, you will probably need to make some changes. One of the first things I recommend is to remove all refined carbohydrates (store bought dry food, kibble, etc.) from their diet. Also, if your cat is currently taking any type of steroidal medication, it should be a high priority to lessen the dosage or do a complete cessation over time. Medications are tough on a cat’s system. They can cause liver and kidney damage, upset the natural biota of the microbiome and promote microbial growths like Candida.
Cats that are recuperating from any type of trauma-related surgery may do well to adopt one of our specialized rehab programs that concentrate on strengthening muscles and tendons. Gentle massage and quiet time with their human being can go a long way in promoting balanced and serenity in their lives. There are lots you can to help your cat maintain a disease-free life – we can show you how.
