Raw Pumpkin Seed Butter
The Diets for Life Research & Development Department is pleased to announce our newest food product for your pet.
Pumpkin Seed Butter has such superior health benefits for your pet that it’s hard to imagine that so few people are feeding it to their dogs as a regular part of their diet. It’s the best kept secret in canine dietetic circles. Diets for Life will be marketing their very own brand of PSB in 2018. Here’s the lowdown:
Nutritional Profile
Pumpkin Seed Butter has an elite nutritional profile that can go a long way in mitigating the onslaught of certain microbials and help to scavenge harmful oxidative free radicals. These little green seeds (Pumpkin Seeds are actually fruit kernels) are good sources of the B complex group of vitamins including: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, and the folates. Vitamins A, C, E and the often elusive vitamin K are also present. In addition, they contain copious amounts of essential minerals like: calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, selenium, phosphorous and zinc. You can’t do any better for your pet.
Caloric Intake – Fat, Protein and Carbs
Two tablespoons of PSB contain approx. 162 calories. I’ve found it best to spread some on a low glycemic carbohydrate (butternut squash, rutabagas, dark red sweet potatoes, turnips) choice as most pets do not take kindly to the taste initially. These two tablespoons also deliver (11) grams of unsaturated fat (both polyunsaturated and monosaturated) along with 2.6 grams of saturated fat. I do not find the 2.6 grams of saturated fat alarming or cause for concern because, once again, these are plant based fats which are naturally occurring and very healthy for your pet. The (6) grams of protein and (2) grams of carbohydrates are in a perfect 3:1 ratio.
Medicinal & Preventative Benefits
Pumpkin Seed Butter contains compounds which have actually been shown to alleviate intestinal worms and parasites (flat worms, tape worms, etc). Moreover, the phytosterol content (Sitosterol, Campesterol, Stigmasterol ) can help inhibit kidney flare-ups and prevent the formation of stones in your pet, as well. Pumpkin seeds are the most alkaline forming of the seeds. Other benefits include an abundance of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which are good for your pet’s heart health. The high content of tryptophan and glutamate (both amino acids) may help aid in keeping your pet calm. Try spreading some PSB inside of a Kong or on a raw bone for your anxious pet. The tryptophan is converted into serotonin (a neurochemical) which is widely known as a natural sleep inducer. If you choose to included sea salt as a flavor enhancer, you are doing two things. First and foremost, you are increasing the sodium content many times over. The upside to that is that the sea salt will probably make the PSB more palatable to your pet.
Seeds or Butter – Which is Best?
It has been my own personal observation over many years of independent research that your pet will be better served by ingesting the butter as opposed to the seed kernels. Are the seeds harmful? No- not at all. However, seeds can fragment or break off and potentially cause some digestive distress, especially if too many are eaten. No such problem with the butter. It’s more palatable to the discriminating taste of your furry friend. Most of the commercially produced PSB’s that I’ve encountered have been pretty good, although I would highly recommend that you read labels first before purchasing. Sometimes, they may include things like: natural flavors, preservatives and chemical additives. These things are not needed. Natural flavors added is just another way of saying that they have added some kind of chemically enhanced agent to make it taste better. As far as the preservatives and chemical additives go, this is a marketing tool that Big-Agra uses to give their product extended shelf life. A good PSB shouldn’t have an extended shelf life. It’s an organic, bio-active food that will naturally break down over the course of several weeks – refrigeration notwithstanding. A really good PSB will have a maximum of (2) or (3) ingredients. That’s all – nothing more.
Where can I buy some for my Pet?
Beginning in 2018, Diets or Life will be offering their own personal brand of Pumpkin Seed Butter for sale on their website. Projected retail price will $ 7. 99 + S&H for a jar. Stay tuned for additional updates.
