When we say our diets for life hummus is homemade - we really Mean it's homemade
We just finished planting our blueberry bushes recently in hopes that they will be producing quality fruit for the 2018 growing season. A rich, succulent blueberry crop can go a long way in helping make our hummus (Blueberry Splash) the preeminent dietary adjunct for your pet. That’s why we decided to grow our own. That’s right; our blueberries will be cultivated right on the Diets for Life premises. We will be using several cultivars – all non-GMO – including Blueberry Legacy, Rubet, Bluecrop, Bluegold, Blueray, Hardyblues, Jersey, Patriot, Duke and Elliot. The aforementioned Northern Highbush varieties are all cold-tolerant and ideally suited for the Eastern USA. These hardy bushes typically grow from 5’ to 9’ in height and are more disease resistant than the other (4) major varieties (Lowbush, Southern Highbush, Rabbit-Eye and Half-High). Since better blueberry fruit production is associated with cross pollination, it is imperative that we mix and match several varities to get the best results.
I built the enclosure you see pictured to help deter all the little opportunists (birds, rabbits, squirrels, possums, etc.) that can literally destroy your crop in no time at all. After the wooden structure went up, I covered the outer perimeter with chicken wire. The more I think about it, the more I came to the realization that additional netting may be necessary. We get really small hummingbirds that are frequent visitors to my back yard and they may be able to penetrate the chicken wire. Our work is never done.
Blueberries are one of Nature’s most perfect foods. They are teeming with polyphenols, anti-oxidants and are low glycemic (they don’t raise blood glucose levels). They provide unadulterated fructose which is an ideal form of sugar for your pet. Store bought blueberries are okay but they are often transported by tractor-trailer over a great distance before they reach your grocery store. Rest assured that Diets for Life blueberries will never be sprayed or subjected to harsh chemicals to keep them fresh. Freshness never tasted so good.
